Formed in Los Angeles during their final year of high school in 1992, the dream pop group The Autumns featured Eric Crissman, Frank Koroshec, Matthew Kelly, and Jon Santana. Although their ethereal and emotive style sometimes echoed earlier artists, the band earned admiration from several of those same influences, confirming they were no mere copyists. Local performances attracted offers from multiple labels, some commanding sizable resources, but the musicians placed creative autonomy first and chose instead to sign with the independent Risk, founded by Frank Volpe, one-time manager of Concrete Blonde and INXS. Their debut, the Suicide at Strell Park EP, appeared in 1997 and was followed later that year by the full-length The Angel Pool. In 1999 the four-song Winter in a Silver Box EP arrived, containing two remixes. Bassist Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins, a major influence on the band, produced In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour in 2000, and a year afterward the four-track EP The Autumns Present Le Carillon was issued.
