The Bear Quartet took shape in 1989 within the compact tundra settlement of Lulea, Sweden, where its five founding members Matti Alkberg on guitar and vocals, Jari Haapalainen on guitar, Peter Nuottaniemi on bass, Johan Forsling on guitar, and Magnus Olsson on drums cultivated an inventive strain of lucid, refined pop. Label support arrived four years later when Stockholm's A West Side Fabrication released the band's opening album, Penny Century. Subsequent full-lengths appeared at regular intervals, among them Cosy Den in 1993, Family Affair in 1994, Everybody Else in 1995, Holy Holy in 1996, Moby Dick in 1997, and Personality Crises in 1998. Repeated cycles of touring and studio commitments produced ongoing changes in personnel after the debut recording. Stability returned in 1998 once Björn Olsson on guitars, Jejo Perkovic on drums, and Calle Olsson on keyboards joined the fold, leaving Alkberg, Haapalainen, and Nuttaniemi as the enduring core.
