In 2001, vocalist and bassist Lisa Marr—previously a member of Cub and Buck—joined forces with drummer Sherri Solinger and guitarist/vocalist Kim Shattuck from the Muffs to form The Beards as a side project. The all-female trio soon opted to produce their first album, prompted by the popularity of their contribution "(I Am Always Touched by Your) Presence" to the Sympathy for the Record Industry release How Many Bands Does It Take to Screw up a Blondie Tribute. With producer Jeff McDonald on board, they quickly commenced recording sessions for the project. Their inaugural effort, Funtown, reached stores during April 2002. Kim Shattuck passed away on October 2, 2019, after enduring amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for two years.
