GWAR emerged as thrash metal's counterpart to Spinal Tap's mainstream parody, distinguished by its outlandish latex-and-papier-mâché outfits and gore-drenched, provocation-heavy stage spectacles. According to the band's intricate lore, the members represent omnipotent extraterrestrial conquerors who arrived on Earth intent on dominating and exterminating humanity. Established in Richmond, Virginia, during 1984, the collective draws on a shifting roster of performers, visual artists, and directors operating under the umbrella of Slave Pit Inc. Across its history the group has produced thirteen studio albums, among them the beloved Scumdogs of the Universe from 1990, Violence Has Arrived from 2001, and Lust in Space from 2009, before pausing briefly in 2014 following the passing of vocalist Oderus Urungus, whose real name was Dave Brockie. Under the leadership of bassist and co-founder Beefcake the Mighty, born Michael Bishop, the band resumed activity in 2017 with the release of The Blood of Gods; five years afterward came The New Dark Ages.

Every participant adopts a pseudonym that underscores the ensemble's macabre wit. The original lineup featured Oderus Urungus on vocals (Dave Brockie), Balsac the Jaws of Death on guitar (Steve Douglas), Flattus Maximus on guitar (Peter Lee), Beefcake the Mighty on bass (Michael Bishop), and Jizmak the Gusher on drums (Brad Roberts). Supporting roles were filled by Techno-Destructo (occasional vocalist Hunter Jackson), Slymenstra Hymen (Danyelle Stampe), the Sexecutioner (Charles Varga), and Sleazy P. Martini (manager Don Drakulich).

The musicians quickly forged a singular visual identity through their grotesque costumes, while the live presentation incorporated mock pagan ceremonies, prop corpses that sprayed washable fluids into the crowd, and, on occasion, a motorized colossal maggot. Predictably, officials in multiple cities objected: Charlotte, North Carolina, levied an obscenity fine against Urungus and imposed a one-year performance ban, and authorities in Athens, Georgia, halted a 1993 show. With assistance from the ACLU, GWAR pursued legal action and reached an out-of-court settlement, directing the proceeds to charitable causes. The ensemble has often been celebrated more for its inventive visual presentation than its recordings; nevertheless, it earned a Grammy nomination in 1993 for the long-form video Phallus in Wonderland.

Despite repeated lineup shifts, GWAR has maintained continuity because the fictional personae remain fixed while only the musicians embodying them rotate. Even as press coverage diminished, the group has sustained a reliable touring presence and issues a fresh album to accompany each new stage production. Unusually for veteran acts, GWAR has issued nearly as many feature-length videos as full-length records. In addition to Phallus in Wonderland these include Skulhed Face (1994), Rendezvous with Ragnarok (1997), Dawn of the Day of the Night of the Penguin (1998), It's Sleazy (2001), and numerous later films.

Among the catalog, the 1990 release Scumdogs of the Universe stands out as one of the most engaging entries. Later efforts such as This Toilet Earth (1993), We Kill Everything (1999), and Violence Has Arrived (2001) revisited the provocative motifs that first drew attention to the band. After a period of inactivity GWAR resurfaced in 2004 on DRT Entertainment with War Party. The live document Live from Mt. Fuji, recorded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, appeared the next year. The 2006 studio album Beyond Hell offered a rock-opera narrative tracing the members' descent into Hell. Marking their twenty-fifth anniversary and returning to Metal Blade, the group pursued another conceptual storyline in 2009's Lust in Space, chronicling an orbital confrontation with Cardinal Sin. The death of Urungus in 2014 at age fifty from a heroin overdose left none of the original members. In 2017 the remaining musicians regrouped with Michael Bishop assuming vocal duties as the new character Blothar the Beserker and issued The Blood of Gods. The fifteenth studio album, The New Dark Ages, arrived in 2022 alongside the graphic novel GWAR in the Duoverse of Absurdity.
