In the prime of his tenure directing the Parliament/Funkadelic organization, George Clinton placed multiple factions of that collective under various label deals. One such act, the all-female Brides of Funkenstein, joined Clinton’s other ensembles on the road. Atlantic held their contract between 1978 and 1980. Although Taka Boom, sister of Chaka Khan, had belonged to the group earlier, the roster documented on those Atlantic dates featured Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva. Ron Banks and Larry Demps from the Dramatics supplied additional support. Their 1978 single “Disco to Go” climbed to number seven on the R&B charts and remained their only hit, even as “Never Buy Texas From a Cowboy” emerged as arguably their most distinctive recording.
