The Campbell Brothers

The Campbell brothers—Chuck on pedal steel, Phillip handling electric guitar and bass, Phillip's son Carlton on drums, and Darick playing eight-string lap steel—deliver electric gospel for the House of God, Keith Dominion church. Their focus remains on steel guitar, and while they steer clear of rock and blues numbers, the arrangements still reveal traces of those styles alongside country, jazz, and additional influences. Though the chosen material stays spiritual, Chuck Campbell's playing stands out for its inventive, occasionally daring approach, achieved through a personal tuning system and the E-bow's haunting sustain. Kate Jackson supplies vocals, and Charles Flenory adds electric guitar on select tracks. The musicians cut Pass Me Not for Arhoolie's Sacred Steel series across 1996 and 1997 sessions. Sacred Steel on Tour! and Sacred Steel for the Holidays both appeared in 2001. In 2005 the group issued Can You Feel It? on Ropeadope. Darick Campbell passed away in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 11, 2020, at age 53, after complications from heart surgery.
