One of the era’s standout one-hit wonders in 1950s rock, the Crescendos vaulted to the number-five slot in early 1958 with their debut release, “Oh Julie.” Essentially an unremarkable doo-wop ballad, the track gained its striking quality from the ethereal high harmonies supplied by Janice Green, a non-member who happened to be trying out in the same studio and was brought in on the spot. Further momentum came from George Lanius’s engaging, Elvis-inflected lead vocals and the raw, almost makeshift production that notably omitted bass. The Nashville outfit proved unable to recapture that spontaneous spark; after issuing two more singles on Nasco, they were dropped by the label, leaving “Oh Julie” to linger on oldies playlists for decades.
