Originating in the United Kingdom, the Disciples operated as a roots and dub reggae ensemble that counted among Jah Shaka’s earliest protégés. Russ D launched the project with his brother Loi around 1985, although Loi later left the lineup. Their debut album, Deliverance, surfaced in 1987 on Jah Shaka King of the Zula Tribe Records, after which three further albums appeared on Shaka’s imprint over the following years. The duo constructed their own sound system in 1991 to support live engagements and, two years later, funded the well-received 12-inch single Prowling Lion, which they issued on the newly founded Boom-Shacka-Lacka Records. In 1996 they established a second outlet, Backyard Movements Records, exclusively to release contemporary Reggae, Jungle, Techno, Jazz, and World music. Over the subsequent decade the Disciples contributed to an extensive catalog of 7-, 10-, and 12-inch pressings while also appearing on numerous recordings by fellow artists.
