Biography
Prolific multi-instrumentalists and producers Adrian Quesada (Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds, Grupo Fantasma) and Shawn Lee (Ping Pong Orchestra, the Superimposers) launched the Electric Peanut Butter Company following their initial encounter at Austin’s South by Southwest music festival in 2010. Lee, based in the U.K., and Quesada, based in Austin, exchanged ideas remotely to fuse retro-funk and psychedelic rock with Latin inflections, drawing particular inspiration from Los Ángeles Negros and El Chicano. Their first album, the puzzlingly named Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics, Vol. 2, appeared in 2013 through Ubiquity—Lee’s longstanding label—and showcased unconventional reinterpretations of the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” alongside Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.” Vol. 1 surfaced two years later.
