Brothers Tim and Neil Finn first began creating music as children in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, and later carried that partnership into the global achievements of Split Enz and Crowded House. Their actual songwriting collaboration only began in late 1989, when the reunion produced more than a dozen tracks intended for a Finn Brothers side project. Plans for that record were abandoned, with most of the songs instead appearing on Crowded House’s Woodface (1991) and Together Alone (1993), along with Tim’s solo release Before & After in 1993. Work resumed in late 1994, and within four weeks the pair finished an album they titled simply Finn. Issued in fall 1995—and the following summer in the U.S.—the record revealed a looser, less pop-driven aspect of their partnership, with the brothers handling nearly every instrument themselves on a range of rudimentary and unusual sounds. Following the first pressings, the duo adopted the Finn Brothers name to distinguish themselves from another act using a similar title. The Finn Brothers re-emerged in 2004 with Everyone Is Here.
