The Flames

In their approach to music, the Flames defied conventions across the board. Being of East Indian descent, these performers stood out as South Africa's sole soul ensemble without African roots; their base was Durban instead of Jo-burg; they focused on full-length albums over chasing hit singles; and their repertoire consisted of interpretations of existing tracks instead of original compositions. Whether in reaction to or as a result of such nonconformity, their popularity soared. Later on, a pair of the band's participants relocated to the United States and became members of the Beach Boys in 1972.
