Biography
Floaters emerged as a fleeting offshoot assembled by former Detroit Emeralds James Mitchell and Marvin Willis, achieving an R&B chart-topper and a number-two pop placement through their ABC debut single “Float On.” Though lacking in both lyrical substance and vocal distinction, the track ranked among the year’s strongest-selling R&B releases in 1977. With Charles Clark handling lead vocals alongside Larry Cunningham, Paul and Ralph Mitchell, and Jonathan Murray, the ensemble proved unable to recapture the momentum created by that breakthrough. The two follow-ups that arrived afterward, “You Don't Have to Say You Love Me” and “I Just Want to Be with You,” actually showcased stronger performances than the hit; both numbers illustrated Clark’s aptitude as a ballad interpreter yet stalled at only modest R&B chart levels.
