Biography
Born on 30 August 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, Johnny Mann assembled a mixed male-and-female vocal ensemble that rose to prominence in the United States during the 1960s. The group distinguished itself through buoyant, rhythmically buoyant vocal settings that stood in sharp opposition to the beat-oriented sounds then dominating the scene. Among its well-received long-playing releases were Roar Along With The Singing ‘Twenties and Swing Along With The Swingin’ ‘Thirties; in addition, the ensemble reached the US Top 10 in 1967 with its version of Jimmy Webb’s ‘Up, Up And Away’. Almost twenty years afterward, the 1984 album The Johnny Mann Singers offered the group’s treatments of several 1960s standards, among them ‘Portrait Of My Love’, ‘A Taste Of Honey’, ‘Dedicated To The One I Love’, ‘Yesterday’ and ‘A World Without Love’.
