Biography
Emerging briefly in the mid-sixties, the Lee Kings harnessed the momentum of the British Invasion to place multiple singles inside Sweden’s Top Ten during both 1966 and 1967. The Swedish rock quintet had been assembled in 1964 under the name Lenne & the Lee Kings by Lenne Broberg, guitarists Bengt Dahlén and Bjarne Möller, bassist Olle Nordström, and drummer Lasse Sandgren. Bassist Nordström exited in 1966 and was succeeded by Mike Watson. The following year Johnny Lundin replaced Möller while Tony Walter took over the drum chair from Sandgren, after which the group disbanded. “Stop the Music” climbed to number two in January 1966, and their only chart-topper, “L.O.D.,” arrived one month later. Both songs appeared on the 1966 debut album Stop the Music, issued by the Grand Prix label and augmented by three tracks from Stockholm’s the Sunspots. “Why, Why, Why,” drawn from the RCA Victor LP Bingo!, reached the Top Ten later that year, while “I Can't Go on Living” became a summer hit in Sweden in 1967.
