Although Heart had reclaimed commercial success throughout the mid- and late 1980s, the group had traded the earthy tone of its earliest work for a polished pop sheen. Early in the following decade, vocalists Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson sought to reconnect with that earlier approach by forming the Lovemongers as a side project. Keyboardist Sue Ennis, guitarist Frank Cox, and drummer Ben Smith completed the lineup. The ensemble made its first appearance on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s 1992 film Singles, delivering a faithful rendition of Led Zeppelin’s folk staple “The Battle of Evermore.” One year afterward the Lovemongers released the four-song EP The Battle of Evermore, which again featured the Zeppelin track alongside interpretations of material by Todd Rundgren and the Temptations as well as Heart’s own early composition “Crazy on You.” Several years passed before the band produced a full-length album; that recording finally surfaced as 1997’s Whirlygig. The following year the Lovemongers issued the ten-track holiday collection Here Is Christmas.
