Biography
In 1957 vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery and electric bassist Monk Montgomery (1921-1982) assembled the Mastersounds, a melodic and easy listening bop ensemble completed by pianist Richie Crabtree and drummer Benny Barth. The group enjoyed several years of visibility, issuing ten albums over four years on Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Fantasy. Wes Montgomery joined one of those 1958 sessions, which presented material drawn from the stage work Kismet. After the ensemble dissolved in 1961 it reconvened briefly in 1965. Throughout the 1960s the two Montgomery brothers repeatedly performed alongside their celebrated sibling when working under Wes’s direction.
