Biography
A comedy duo blending elements of Tenacious D with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour yet leaning primarily into an eccentric, endearing mix of outlaw, pothead, and down-home Southern traits, the Naked Trucker & T-Bones earned a devoted underground audience before achieving wider exposure in 2007 via an eight-episode Comedy Central series. In the act Dave “Gruber” Allen, previously recognized for portraying the school counselor on Freaks and Geeks, embodies the Naked Trucker—an amiable, free-spirited long-haul driver guided by the motto “To truly be free, you got to take off your duds.” Opposite him, David Koechner, familiar from Anchorman, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and his recurring part on the American version of The Office, portrays Gerald “T-Bones” Tibbons, a glib occasional grifter and lifelong rural eccentric whose superficial grasp of countless subjects fuels his nonstop chatter. The pair first crossed paths when Koechner was a cast member on Saturday Night Live and Allen was brought in as a guest writer; their friendship deepened during the independent country-music comedy Dill Scallion. Allen later asked Koechner to share the stage at his occasional appearances at the celebrated West Hollywood venue Largo.
Those joint performances began in 1997, after which the Naked Trucker & T-Bones continued to play sporadic Largo dates and occasional national tours with their relaxed, off-the-cuff format. Tenacious D surprised audiences by serving as an unannounced opening act at one Largo show in 2003; the following year the Trucker and T-Bones repaid the gesture by supporting the D on a brief tour. By then the act had attracted followers beyond the West Coast, largely through fans circulating live recordings online. Comedy Central launched The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show in 2007, which The New York Times described as “like Hee Haw, only nakeder.” Apart from location segments shot away from the studio, the program mirrored the duo’s Largo performances. Reviews were divided, yet listeners already familiar with bootleg tapes embraced the complete presentation. As the series concluded its run, Warner Bros. Nashville released the group’s first official recording, Live at the Troubadour, simultaneously on CD and DVD.
