The Rarely Herd ranked among Ohio’s standout contemporary bluegrass acts and built a loyal following across the festival circuit. Their sets blended progressive and traditional bluegrass with original material and adaptations drawn from outside the genre, earning particular praise for tight vocal harmonies and high-energy shows. Guitarist and lead vocalist Jim Stack anchored the group alongside his brother, fiddler/mandolinist/vocalist Alan Stack, a former child prodigy, and bassist Jim Weaver.

A 1992 appearance at the International Bluegrass Music Awards placed the Ohio ensemble at the forefront of modern bluegrass. Pinecastle released the band’s debut, Midnight Loneliness, that same year. Heartbreak City arrived in 1994, followed in 1996 by the gospel-flavored album What About Him, which drew widespread critical approval. The Rarely Herd kept collecting honors while captivating crowds through their distinctive fusion of instrumental skill and stage antics. Coming of Age surfaced in 1999, with A Part of Growing Up appearing soon afterward.
