Before forming the Silver Seas, Daniel Tashian had already built a career as a solo performer handling vocals and guitar. He recruited producer and keyboardist Jason Lehning to shape the band’s ‘70s-inspired classic pop/rock sound. Originally operating as the Bees (U.S.), the group assembled in Nashville, Tennessee, adding John Deaderick on bass and David Gehrke on drums.

The self-released debut album Starry Gazey Pie appeared in 2004 and earned airplay from influential outlets such as Boston’s WFNX and L.A.’s KCRW. Those rotations, together with a national tour supporting Guster, allowed the band to issue its follow-up, High Society, in 2006.

Cheap Lullaby signed the Bees (U.S.) in April 2007, after which the Nashville act adopted the Silver Seas name that September to resolve a legal conflict with the British band A Band of Bees. The label then reissued High Society the following month.
