Biography
In 1967 Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the noted Philadelphia production duo, scored one of their earliest standout credits on the Soul Survivors' lone major success, "Expressway to Your Heart." Though the musicians themselves were white, the band projected a credible R&B approach across its first Crimson sides. Gamble and Huff dressed the single with blaring horns and assorted car-engine noises, yet its lasting impact derived from the impassioned lead vocals and insistent groove. The follow-up, "Explosion in Your Soul," underperformed, after which the group slipped from view before notching a final hit in 1974.
