Stephen Stills, born on 3 January 1945 in Dallas, Texas, USA, and known for guitar and vocals, joined forces briefly with Neil Young, born on 12 November 1945 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and likewise credited with guitar and vocals, after their shared tenures in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young. Their collaboration took shape in 1975 once Young made several impromptu appearances on Stills’s promotional tour. The resulting album, Long May You Run, featured Stills’s regular backing musicians—Jerry Aeillo on keyboards, George Perry on bass, Joe Vitale on drums and flute, and Joe Lala on percussion—alongside the two principals. Although David Crosby and Graham Nash initially contributed during the early recording sessions, those parts were later removed, which created tension among the four former bandmates. Any plans for a full reunion were abandoned, prompting Crosby and Nash to resume their own duo work. Several strong tracks appeared on Long May You Run, among them the title song and “Black Coral,” yet the collection felt disjointed overall and was widely regarded as underwhelming. The supporting tour soon collapsed when Young departed after only a few shows, leaving Stills the cryptic message: “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach, Neil.”
