Biography
Formed as an improbable rock trio consisting of New York City guitarist and vocalist Barbara Keith (aka mom), ex-television sitcom writer Doug Tibbles (aka dad) who switched to drums, and bassist John Tibbles (aka son) who began playing at age 11, the Stone Coyotes forged an unconventional route in pursuit of rock & roll credibility, moving from New York City through Los Angeles before settling in Western Massachusetts. Avoiding major-label channels, they issued their debut album Church of the Falling Rain via a direct arrangement with Amazon.com, which drew the attention of novelist Elmore Leonard, author of Jackie Brown and Get Shorty. Leonard subsequently joined the Stone Coyotes for a series of combined reading-and-music performances and collaborated with them to place their songs in an upcoming film project. Their next record, Situation Out of Control, appeared on Red Cat Records during summer 2000. Appreciating the imprint’s independent ethos, they followed with Ride Away from the World as their second release on the Massachusetts label.
