The Three O'Clock stood as the definitive representative of Los Angeles's Paisley Underground scene. Michael Quercio, who handled lead vocals and bass, actually originated the phrase "Paisley Underground" to characterize a circle of groups—the Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, Green on Red, and the Bangles among them—that fused the ringing guitar tones of the Byrds and the Beatles with psychedelic-leaning pop compositions and matching period attire. The group first assembled in 1982 under the name Salvation Army as a trio; they abandoned that moniker after clashing with the charitable organization that already used it. Quercio and guitarist Louis (formerly Gregg) Gutierrez formed the initial core. Their 1982 self-titled debut showcased a raw garage approach.

The arrival of former Weirdos drummer Danny Benair and keyboardist Mickey Mariano expanded the lineup for the 1983 EP Baroque Hoedown and the full-length Sixteen Tambourines, both issued by Frontier Records; the resulting sound shifted toward refined, immaculate pop. I.R.S. released Arrive Without Travelling in 1985, with Ever After appearing the following year. Gutierrez exited in 1986. For the Warner Bros./Paisley Park album Vermillion—issued after Prince expressed his admiration—Jason Falkner joined on guitar. The association ultimately unraveled the band, as their output failed to satisfy the label's commercial hopes and Quercio rejected any attempt to cast him as a polished pop idol or figurehead for an untimely nostalgia movement.

Quercio has remained active in various Los Angeles pop outfits, Gutierrez became a core member of Mary's Danish, and Falkner has pursued a solo career. Years of declining reunion proposals ended when the original members, with Adam Merrin of the 88 stepping in for the absent Mariano, regrouped for a 2013 Coachella Festival performance. Omnivore Records soon issued The Hidden World Revealed, compiling album cuts and obscurities from the Frontier era.
