Biography
Jess and Lisa Origliasso make up the Veronicas, identical twins whose wide-ranging interests fuel their knack for clever, polished pop. Rising during the peak of mall-oriented pop-punk in the mid-2000s, the pair initially shared billing with Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson, enlisting Max Martin and Dr. Luke for their 2006 debut The Secret Life Of… and maintaining ties to Toby Gad across multiple projects. They stayed rooted in punky pop for Hook Me Up before expanding their range on the self-titled 2014 album. Already dominant at home in Australia, the sisters sustained that momentum through a lengthy recording gap, which ended dramatically with the simultaneous arrival of Godzilla and Human in 2021. Their streak of fresh material continued with the energetic sixth album Gothic Summer, issued in early 2024.
Brisbane served as the starting point for Jess and Lisa Origliasso, who entered the entertainment industry at age five. Born on Christmas Day in 1984, the sisters performed first as the Origliasso Twins, with appearances at awards shows and sporting events attracting agents and talent scouts. During their teenage years they issued three teen-pop albums under the name Lisa & Jessica and secured recurring parts on the Australian children’s series Cybergirl. After Jess received a guitar for her birthday in 2002, the siblings redirected their energies toward songwriting and gradually steered their music toward alternative rock.
Teaming with two friends, the Origliassos launched the band Teal and issued the catchy single “Baby It’s Over,” which positioned them as in-demand writers. Following stints with assorted collaborators, they secured a publishing agreement and placed material with Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan, Japanese pop singer Miz, and the Russian group t.A.T.u. Intent on building an international profile, the twins relocated to Los Angeles. Shortly after turning twenty and adopting the Veronicas moniker, they signed with Sire, a Warner Bros. imprint.
Sire issued the Veronicas’ debut full-length, The Secret Life Of…, in 2005, with a wider rollout arriving in early 2006. The set performed strongest in Australia, spawning three Top Ten singles and eventually earning quadruple-platinum status. Hook Me Up arrived in 2007, showcasing a new-wave flavor that again achieved multi-platinum sales domestically; its single “Untouched” reached number one in Ireland and registered strongly abroad. Extensive touring supported both releases, captured on the live document Revenge Is Sweeter Tour released in late 2009.
Work on a third album began in January 2010, with an intended 2012 release that slipped after lead single “Lolita” underperformed and Warner deferred the project to 2013. Persistent label friction resulted in a split in October 2013. The duo quickly aligned with Sony Music and delivered “Did You Miss Me?” in March of that year. Follow-up single “You Ruin Me” surfaced in September, preceding the eponymous third album in November, which reached the United States in March 2015. “You Ruin Me” became their second chart-topping single, while the album marked their third consecutive peak at number two on the ARIA ranking.
In 2016 the sisters served as coaches on The Voice Australia, an exposure that propelled “In My Blood” to number one. Subsequent years brought scattered digital singles and a hiatus that stretched through most of 2018. They returned in 2019 with the Australian MTV reality series The Veronicas: Blood Is for Life, fronted by the accompanying theme “Ugly.” A second stint on The Voice Australia followed in 2020. May 2021 saw the release of Godzilla, their first album in seven years, followed the next month by Human, which ventured into electronic territory. Both sets landed inside Australia’s Top Ten.
The Veronicas joined Big Noise in late 2022 and introduced “Perfect” a year later as the lead track from their sixth studio album, Gothic Summer, which arrived in 2024. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes, the record stepped back from the dance textures of Human while retaining bustling electronics within a pop framework.
