Folk trio the Young'uns came together in County Durham during 2004, after Sean Cooney, David Eagle, and Michael Hughes first encountered the Stockton Folk Club inside a neighborhood pub while drinking underage. Captivated by the music they discovered there, the three young musicians launched the group and chose their name to reflect their status as the youngest regulars at the venue. Their debut album, When Grandfathers Said No, arrived in 2012 and mixed cover versions with original songs. The follow-up, Never Forget, issued two years later, helped establish the trio’s characteristic approach of sparse instrumentation and frequent a cappella delivery.

The year 2015 marked a breakthrough period, as they issued their third studio album, Another Man's Ground, then received the Best Live Act prize at the Spiral awards and the Best Group honor at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. They claimed the same BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards group title again in 2016 during a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall. Festival appearances at Glastonbury Festival and Cambridge Folk Festival followed amid the growing recognition. In 2017 the band put out Strangers, an album that addressed both present-day and historical topics.
