Biography
Thibault Cauvin, whose guitar work encompasses Baroque repertoire as well as contemporary and film scores, issues his recordings on Sony Classical.
Born July 16, 1984, in Bordeaux, France, he is the son of Philippe Cauvin, a guitarist and composer active in jazz and rock. He studied at the Regional Conservatory of Bordeaux (CRR) and the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris (CNSMD) with Olivier Chassain, completing his training with honors, and received further guidance from Alvaro Pierri, Judicaël Perroy, and additional mentors. Before reaching twenty, he had accumulated thirty-six first prizes in international competitions.
His debut recording, No. 4, appeared in 2008 on GSP Recordings and included compositions by his father as well as Dusan Bogdanovic, Roland Dyens, Atanas Ourkouzounov, and Chassain. In 2013 he released Danse avec Scarlatti on the Vogue label. That year he assembled an ensemble of one hundred guitars in Bordeaux to mark his musical anniversary. The following year he observed that he had already performed more than one thousand concerts in some one hundred twenty countries, a pace of touring he has sustained.
His engagements have included both prominent stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Gasteig in Munich and more intimate settings like the Guatemala Arts Center. Film music forms one strand of his wide-ranging programs, explored on the 2021 album Films. Since The Vivaldi Album, recorded in 2016 with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Cauvin has recorded for Sony Classical; that label later issued Films and, in 2023, Bach. During the 2020 COVID-19 shutdowns he presented Leo Brouwer’s music in online recitals. In 2021 he appeared on the Claves release Pierre Wissmer: Musiques Symphonique & Concertos.
An enthusiastic surfer, he frequently contributes to soundtracks composed by his friend Nicolas Pier Morin, who has also directed a documentary about Cauvin’s career.
