Biography
Conductor Thomas Dausgaard, whose career has encompassed an unusually wide spectrum of music across historical eras, maintains particularly strong ties to Danish composers as well as figures from neighboring Scandinavian countries. Most of his studio work has centered on Danish and Swedish repertoire, with an emphasis on living creators, while his major appointments have been divided between ensembles in those nations and elsewhere.
Born in Copenhagen on 4 July 1963, Dausgaard pursued his training first at the Royal Danish Academy of Music before continuing at the Royal College of Music in London. Early freelance engagements and modest positions throughout Scandinavia preceded his breakthrough appointment in 1997 as principal conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, a post he occupied until 2019. His earliest commercial release appeared in 1995 on the Dacapo label, a recording of Friedrich Ludwig Aemilius Kunzen’s opera Holger Dansk. Two years later he led the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bach to the Future, a Chandos collection featuring Nørgård’s title piece alongside additional works. His Proms debut occurred in 2001 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, after which he worked repeatedly with British ensembles such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. That same year he added another prominent role, becoming principal guest conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra; he advanced to principal conductor in 2004—the first Dane to hold the title—and received the honorary conductor designation upon leaving the post in 2011.
A 2006 Dacapo recording presented Langgaard’s opera Antikrist under his direction. The following year he recorded Dvořák’s Symphonies Nos. 6 and 9 with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra for BIS. In 2010 he brought both the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the Danish National Symphony to the Proms. His Seattle connection began in 2014 as principal guest conductor of the Seattle Symphony; he assumed the music directorship in 2019 and relinquished it three years later, citing a hostile work environment. Between 2016 and 2022 he also served as chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. While his programs include core repertoire, they frequently feature Bent Sørensen, Johan Svendsen, and Dag Wirén, together with an especially deep commitment to Rued Langgaard, Per Nørgård, and Asger Hamerik. Extensive, widely admired multi-disc surveys of the orchestral music of the last three composers stand among his most significant recorded achievements. He has taken his ensembles on regular European tours and has appeared as guest conductor with leading American orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra.
His extensive discography spans numerous labels. Despite his concentration on Scandinavian music, he has earned high critical regard for a Simax series devoted to the complete orchestral works of Beethoven. Several releases appeared in 2020, among them Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 with the Bergen Philharmonic and a pair of Carl Nielsen symphonies with the Seattle Symphony. In 2024 he was named principal guest conductor of both Spain’s RTVE Symphony Orchestra and the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra.
