Born in Hamburg, Germany, Astor launched his professional path in 1975 as a German pop star before emerging as the foremost central European artist active in the country music idiom. Among his notable partnerships are those with Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. His first album, Flieg Junger Adler, appeared in 1980. The following year he stood in for Germany at the International Show of the Country Music Association in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Recognition has accrued steadily since then, including the Country Entertainer Of The Year award he received at the International Country Music Federation rally in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1983. Domestic sales of his 1983 single, ‘Hallo, Guten Morgen Deutschland’, proved so extensive that they sparked substantial expansion of the German country music scene. Additional hit singles arrived in due course, among them ‘Take It Easy: Nimm’s Leicht’, ‘International Airport’ and ‘Sturm Und Drang’. His albums have likewise incorporated longstanding country standards such as ‘The Most Beautiful Girl In The World’ and ‘Tennessee Waltz’ in German-language versions.
