Biography
Tom Paley gained recognition through his tenure with the New Lost City Ramblers during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Following his relocation first to Sweden and later to England, he sustained efforts to promote traditional music from across the globe, including sessions alongside such artists as Jean Ritchie and Peggy Seeger. Scandinavian fiddle traditions also entered his performances, most notably through joint projects with his son Ben that yielded the albums On a Cold Winter Night (1993) and Svenska Låtar: Swedish Fiddle Tunes (1998). A reliable repository of lesser-known folk material, Paley maintained an active recording career well into the new millennium, releasing Beware Young Ladies! with Bert Deivert in 2007. He passed away in Brighton, England, in September 2017 at the age of 89.
