Biography

Tone, a self-described guitar ensemble, shares unmistakable common ground with Savage Republic and the Band of Susans, and these parallels appear entirely deliberate. The Washington, D.C.-based instrumental outfit issued its first album on Independent Project, the imprint founded by former Savage Republic guitarist Bruce Licher, with production handled by Robert Poss of the Band of Susans. Drawing on ex-members of Government Issue and Unrest, the ensemble constructs dense layers of post-punk guitar textures that carry a faint psychedelic tint while echoing elements of Glenn Branca’s electric guitar orchestrations. Sustain was released in 1996.
