Tony Reedus first drew notice for his explosive yet controlled playing as part of Woody Shaw’s band in the early 1980s. The drummer, whose style combined dynamic energy with animated precision, later appeared on sessions led by James Williams and Mulgrew Miller while also heading his own dates for Jazz City and Enja throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Returning to New York after a performance in Italy, Reedus died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism on November 16, 2008, at age 49.
