Biography
Under the guidance of Tony Rivers, the ensemble launched its recording career with R&B-rooted selections at the dawn of the 1960s. Its first contract came via EMI’s Columbia imprint, prompting early covers of Jackie Wilson numbers alongside a pronounced taste for committing material by American songwriters to tape across any stylistic vein. As the decade advanced, the sound shifted toward pop structures built on vocal harmonies, yielding cuts such as “She” and a 1966 single featuring their rendition of the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.” A move to Parlophone followed later that year, succeeded by a stint at Immediate that produced only the single “Girl Don’t Tell” b/w “Girl From Salt Lake City,” after which a lone release appeared on Polydor. The unit disbanded in 1968 once Rivers joined Ray Brown and Kenny Rowe to establish Harmony Grass, an ensemble marked by a more pronounced psychedelic approach.
