Biography
Torsson first attracted notice in the early 1980s as an oddity whose plainspoken words and limited instrumental command suggested a novelty act more than a conventional group. Whether the members began with earnest ambitions remains uncertain, yet numbers devoted to an ordinary picnic or a country fair edged toward verse of a deliberately flat, singular kind. Their casual approach to playing and understated tunes placed them, in that period, at once as eccentric local kin to punk and as its direct antithesis. Popularity endured across the decades, although activity dropped sharply in the 1990s; without ever formally splitting, the band gave repeated indications that it was fading.
The group originated in 1976 in Lund, Sweden, assembled from hobby players under the leadership of guitarist and vocalist Åkerström. Early influences ranged from classic rock & roll and country rock in the manner of Creedence Clearwater Revival to the Swedish progressive scene of the 1970s, which emphasized self-reliant music-making. The actual lineup—trumpeter Lundahl, drummer Dalén, and guitarists Drejare and Svenningsson—produced results remote from those sources. The resulting sound often prefigured what later became known as lo-fi, an approach that meshed intriguingly with the band’s inconclusive texts. Torsson’s debut performance occurred in November 1976 at a Lund theater; subsequent appearances were confined to student spots in the same city and generated little recognition even locally. Serious professional steps began in 1979 with the single “Gå Emot Strömmen,” issued on Kloaak. After Drejare and Svenningsson departed and Wiberg entered, two further singles appeared on a Swedish pop anthology, paving the way for album sessions. Drummer Sticky Bomb, formerly of Kriminella Gitarrer, joined at this stage, and the debut LP Att Kunna Men Inte Vilja arrived in 1980, anchored by the enduring hit “Det Spelades Bättre Boll,” with which the band would be linked for the next two decades.
The outfit dissolved in 1981 when Åkerström relocated to San Diego for microbiological research, prompting Sticky Bomb’s exit to Wilmer X. Åkerström’s return in 1983 prompted a reunion that added drummer Manzini and bassist Persson. En Rökare I Krysset followed in 1984, inaugurating the busiest stretch of the band’s history, marked by extensive national tours and an expanding audience. A third album was tracked in 1987, then revised two years later with assistance from Holst of Wilmer X and Möller of Buckaroos before its release as En Svensk Tiger. Although the participation of more accomplished players yielded the cleanest musical results Torsson had yet achieved, the move toward mainstream pop textures, however unintentional on the lyrical side, eroded some of the group’s earlier character. Visibility waned during the 1990s as members turned primarily to their professions as teachers, scientists, and physicians. Island of Hawaii appeared in 1994, accompanied by sporadic live shows and the first concert recording, Elvamannalag. Once more viewed as a peripheral curiosity and functioning essentially as a hobby project, Torsson had circled back close to its origins more than twenty years after forming.
