The Australian ensemble Triosk emerged as a collective of skilled players devoted to experimental sounds, fusing post-bop jazz with ambient electronica, post-rock, electro-acoustic explorations, free improvisation, and musique concrète. Their initial notice among global experimental audiences arose from an unexpected partnership with German microhouse artist Jan Jelinek.

Established in Sydney during 2001 by pianist Adrian Klumpes, who trained at a conservatory, along with bassist Ben "Donny" Waples and drummer/percussionist Laurence Pike—who participates in Pivot! and Roam the Hello Clouds, and has performed alongside Flanger, Savath + Savalas, Jack Ladder, Qua, and under the solo name Laurenz Pike—the trio aimed to create music rooted in improvisation where electronics served as an "active and equal" element. Using the standard jazz piano trio setup as foundation, they aimed to extend its boundaries through minimalism and electronica methods, involving both the combination of electronic and acoustic elements and the electronic alteration of their instruments, either during live performances or in later studio processing.

After hearing Jan Jelinek's abstract, loop-driven "jazz" work Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records—his minimal dub achievement that draws unrecognizably from old jazz recordings—on a late-night radio show, Triosk started using samples from Jelinek in their concerts, responding improvisationally to evolving loops from a mini-disc. Jelinek's Australian tour in November 2001 allowed them to connect and build a collaborative bond, leading two years afterward to the release of 1+3+1. This project, assembled via transcontinental mail exchanges and named for its creation method, featured initial improvisations by Triosk over Jelinek's pre-recorded tracks, which he then refined, edited, and mastered in Berlin. The partners performed jointly during a 2004 Australian tour, notably at the inaugural Jazz:NOW festival in Sydney.

Jelinek contributed to a pair of songs on Moment Returns, Triosk's debut full-length album, captured concurrently with 1+3+1 yet issued in 2004 on the London-based Leaf label rather than Scape, Jelinek's usual home, which suited the group's innovative acoustic-electronic blend, akin to other Leaf acts like Colleen, Psapp, and Manitoba. Their follow-up, the more unified yet electronic Headlight Serenade, arrived in July 2006, the same year Adrian Klumpes put out his similar solo album Be Still in November. Laurence Pike declared his exit in December 2007, effectively ending the group due to unbridgeable musical and personal divergences.
