Slovenian DJ and producer Uroš Umek, performing under the name Umek, first surfaced in the early 1990s. A native of Ljubljana, he initially gravitated toward acid house before shifting to techno and cultivating a raw, forceful style in the process. Numerous 12" singles and EPs have appeared on a broad range of labels, several of them founded or co-founded by Umek himself, including Consumer Recreation, Recycled Loops, Astros Discos, and 1605. Key albums and commercial DJ mixes in his catalog comprise On Monoïd (Monoïd, 1999), Neuro (Tehnika, 2002), Umek? Hell Yeah (Hell Yeah, 2009), Responding to Dynamic (1605, 2010), and the 2010 and 2013 volumes of Toolroom Knights (Toolroom). He has also supplied remixes for tracks by Space DJ'z, Speedy J, the Advent, and Depeche Mode. Umek reports completing more than 100 performances worldwide each year.
