Drawn to a style he labeled minimal dance music, Vince Clarke of Erasure reached out to Martin Gore—once his colleague in Depeche Mode—to join forces on a techno project. Gore agreed, prompting the pair’s initial partnership in thirty years, carried out through independent work and file exchanges. Their opening A-side under the VCMG moniker was the spare, austere, and intricate club cut “Spock,” issued by Mute—the longtime home to both Erasure and Depeche Mode—in November 2011, accompanied by reworkings from Regis, Edit Select, and XOQ. The full-length Ssss followed in March of the next year, again via Mute.
