Vert serves as the moniker under which England's Adam Butler conducts his various musical endeavors. Theoretical foundations typical of the glitch movement in electronic music permeate his work, which also features dense textures shaped by processing techniques developed after Autechre. A pronounced melodic orientation nevertheless distinguishes Vert from many peers. Because the resulting tracks tend to remain accessible and immediately appealing, the project offers an effective entry point for listeners exploring the more abstract dimensions of IDM.

Butler issued the initial Vert recording as the jungle-inspired 12-inch Broken Breakbeat Bebop on Bovinyl, a label he established alongside Tim Gould, known as Milky Boy, and Andrew Coleman of Animals on Wheels. In 1999 he aligned with like-minded artists at Sonig, the imprint founded by Germany's Mouse on Mars, issuing the 12-inch Mewantemooseic that same year. The following year brought The Köln Konzert, Vert's intriguing reinterpretation of Keith Jarrett's landmark album The Köln Concert. Additional Sonig output arrived in 2001 with the 12-inch Moremooseicforme and the varied, accomplished full-length Nine Types of Ambiguity. During a well-received tour that year supporting Mouse on Mars, Vert joined the group for occasional onstage appearances.
