Maarten Devoldere, lead singer and chief songwriter for Belgium’s indie pop group Balthazar, operates Warhaus as his lone venture and creative alias. He launched the endeavor in 2016 after noting that Balthazar’s members had chosen a hiatus to pursue separate solo endeavors. Warhaus displays a more volatile character than its parent band. Devoldere pairs a laconic yet vividly theatrical romantic baritone with electric guitars, shadowy beats, vibraphones, hazy keyboards, strings, and intermittent brass, conjuring nocturnal, atmospheric echoes of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Benjamin Biolay, Serge Gainsbourg, and Love and Money while maintaining incisive melodies and a dry, occasionally macabre wit laced with lyricism and lasting feeling.

The project’s first album, We Fucked a Flame Into Being, surfaced in 2016 on Play It Again Sam and drew positive critical notice. Twelve months later the self-titled follow-up appeared, winning favor on social platforms and radio while the group played across Western and Northern Europe. Once pandemic restrictions lifted, Warhaus resumed studio work and delivered the widely praised Ha Ha Heartbreak in 2022, regarded as its most refined full-length statement. Karaoke Moon, released in 2024, continued in the same vein of shadowy pop, low-lit club jazz, and modern yacht rock.
