Biography
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Young specialized in cornet and trumpet. He performed with military ensembles based in Washington, D.C., appeared alongside Hampton Hawes in 1956, and joined John Coltrane for a collaboration the next year. His playing followed the approach of Miles Davis and received support from Billie Holiday. Young’s fluid, melodic phrasing continues to serve as an example for developing brass players. Following a struggle with brain cancer, he died in December 2003 at age 71.
