Biography
Brooklyn's Weird Owl came together in 2004 and developed a style positioned between the expansive outbursts of fellow Brooklynites Oneida and the drifting, probing guitar lines of Black Mountain. The group forged a distinct identity by merging the template of psych rock forerunners 13th Floor Elevators with the reflective singing approach of Neil Young. Their recordings accordingly blend saturated distortion with unhurried, eddying keyboard textures, yielding neo-psych that retains an experimental edge while evoking the era when album-oriented rock dominated and towering guitar figures held sway. In February 2009 the band issued Ever the Silver Cord Be Loosed through TeePee Records. Two years afterward they delivered Build Your Beast a Fire, a languid collection captured with Dinosaur Jr. producer Justin Pizzoferrato. On the 2013 mini album Healing, Weird Owl shifted toward a brighter, more open texture and moved to A Recordings, the label founded by Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe. Maintaining that softer psych direction, they followed with the 2015 full-length Interstellar Skeletal.
