Marius Westernhagen came into the world on December 6, 1948. His father, the actor Hans Müller Westernhagen, directed the youngster early toward stage performance. When the elder Westernhagen died at 44, Marius was still an early teenager yet already advancing toward a film career. Recognition arrived first through his 1979 role in Theo Gegen den Rest der Welt; portraying a disgruntled truck driver brought public notice that he channeled into his earlier modest musical activities. Those activities had included playing rhythm guitar and harmonica plus singing in Düsseldorf groups, though recordings and concerts had previously reached only minor cult status. His debut album Mit Pfefferminz Bin Ich Dein Prinz drew on that screen success and earned gold status after three years. Sekt Oder Selters followed in 1980 and Stinker arrived in 1981. Through the eighties his standing grew across the European rock circuit; near-annual releases maintained listener engagement while supporting regular tours. Westernhagen proved an exception to typical industry trajectories, reaching Billboard’s European Top 100 in 2005 with Nahaufnahme more than two decades after his first record.
