A seasoned ensemble in the realm of rhythm and blues, the Whispers boasted a storied history of chart successes within the genre. Originating from Los Angeles under the guidance of brothers Walter and Wallace Scott along with Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon—who departed the lineup during 1973—the ensemble first appeared via Dore Records during 1964 via the track "I Was Born When You Kissed Me." Their initial ascent on soul listings occurred in 1969 through "The Time Has Come," issued by Soul Clock, followed by breaching the upper echelons of R&B rankings in the subsequent year courtesy of "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong." Sustained commercial achievements continued across Janus, Soul Train, and Solar imprints, highlighted by the enduring 1980 anthem "And the Beat Goes On," which secured the pinnacle position with gold status, as well as the 1987 urban contemporary leader "Rock Steady." Having functioned as the group's backbone and selling point from its founding onward, twin lead vocalists Walter and Wallace Scott stepped away for solo pursuits in 1993 while still remaining part of the Whispers. Co-founder Gordy Harmon died on January 5, 2023 at his home in Los Angeles, CA; he was 79 years old.
