Biography
White Sea functions as the solo endeavor of Los Angeles singer-songwriter Morgan Kibby, recognized primarily for serving as vocalist and keyboardist with the French electronic outfit M83. Kibby made her first solo appearance under her given name in 2003, after which an early EP underwent two expansions and adaptations across multiple group monikers before culminating with the Romanovs. Their solitary full-length, ...And the Moon Was Hungry..., arrived in 2007, after which Kibby initiated work with M83 by contributing keys, arrangements, and multiple compositions to the 2008 release Saturdays=Youth. Once several months of touring alongside M83 concluded in 2009, she returned to assemble a personal studio and captured the material that formed White Sea’s inaugural EP, This Frontier, issued in 2010. The new songs departed from her prior Romanovs output by embracing a sweeping, dance-driven aesthetic first explored during her time with M83. Following the EP’s appearance, Kibby alternated between producing remixes for School of Seven Bells, Lord Huron, and Manchester Orchestra under the White Sea name and rejoining M83 to help shape their 2011 album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. White Sea’s debut full-length, In Cold Blood, emerged in May 2014. The next year she launched a sequence of singles and videos under the Postcards from Nowhere banner, a project that continued through 2016, the same year director Eva Husson’s provocative film Bang Gang incorporated Kibby’s music. In 2017 the Postcards from Nowhere tracks, together with further selections, were gathered for White Sea’s sophomore album, Tropical Odds.
