William Topley possesses a resonant British baritone shaped by dense literary references and drawn equally to the blues-drenched atmosphere of the American South and the offbeat pulses of Jamaican reggae. He fronted the Blessing across a pair of albums issued in the first half of the 1990s, performances that attracted notice from several figures inside the U.S. record business, among them MCA executive Luke Lewis. Once Lewis assumed the presidency of Mercury Nashville, he offered Topley a contract. Another admirer, veteran Muscle Shoals keyboardist and producer Barry Beckett, was enlisted to helm sessions in Nashville that produced the singer’s first solo release, Black River, which appeared in the opening months of 1997. The follow-up, Mixed Blessing, arrived the next year and carried a clear devotion to Southern Black soul alongside a rough-hewn country inflection. In 1999 Topley explored the folk textures and recurring rhythmic patterns of Americana on Spanish Wells. The early 2000s marked a period of renewed exploration; unwilling to repeat prior formulas, Topley pursued further experiments that merged reggae and Cuban elements with his most introspective material to date on Feasting with Panthers, issued by Lost Highway in early 2002. Sea Fever surfaced in 2005, accompanied by a string of West Coast performances alongside Mark Knopfler.
