Biography

Formed in New York during the final years of the 1980s, the doom/death outfit Winter originated with vocalist and bassist John Alman, guitarist Stephen Flam, and drummer Joe Goncalves. Keyboard duties fell occasionally to Tony Pinnisi. The group’s deliberately sluggish and abrasive approach proved so difficult to market that their debut album, Into Darkness, spent two years without a home until Nuclear Blast issued the 1992 record. A comparably bleak EP, Eternal Frost, arrived in 1995 and effectively closed the band’s original recording career. Winter nevertheless resurfaced in 2011, when the veteran metal unit reunited for a performance at the Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands.
