Biography
Originating from Manchester in the United Kingdom, Working for a Nuclear Free City started life as a studio-only project featuring Phil Kay, responsible for production along with keyboards and vocals, and Gary McClure handling guitars. The lineup shifted toward live performance in 2004, when Kay’s brother Jon joined on drums and Ed Hulme came aboard for bass and vocals, entering the fold only days ahead of their debut gig. Their output blends hypnotic rock with electronic textures beneath soft vocal layers, yielding a self-titled album issued in October 2006 and the Rocket EP the following March 2007. The band has also supplied remixes for acts including the Rakes and Starsailor. Gary McClure issued his debut solo album, Wreaths, in 2013; one year later Phil Kay released the solo set Zoetrope under the name King of the Mountains.
