Biography
Grandaddy's subtly mind-altering sonic palette and eccentric verses exploring subjects such as clerical routines and automatons, paired with the wistful singing of frontman Jason Lytle, has demonstrated both originality and staying power. Shifting from the jittery independent rock of their earliest releases toward the electronically textured western progressive pop heard on Sophtware Slump in 2000, the ensemble later eased into gentler textures on releases including Just Like the Fambly Cat from 2006 before disbanding. Following a decade-long separation the members reassembled, after which Lytle sustained his interest in broader sonic textures that yielded the airy, waltz-centric cosmic country of Blu Wav in 2024.
Formed in Modesto, California during 1992 by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Lytle, bassist Kevin Garcia, and drummer Aaron Burtch, the group initially favored a noisy, lo-fi aesthetic on recordings such as Complex Party Come Along Theories in 1994. The arrival of guitarist Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Tim Dryden in 1995 broadened the ensemble's range considerably, powering later projects including the unreleased Don't Sock the Tryer and the 1996 EP A Pretty Mess by This One Band. First appearing on the independent Will Records imprint, the widely praised 1997 album Under the Western Freeway marked Grandaddy's artistic arrival; the following year V2 reissued the set, and the track "Summer Here Kids" received Single of the Week recognition from NME.
A collection of earlier singles titled The Broken Down Comforter Collection appeared ahead of the 1999 EP Signal to Snow Ratio, which signaled a turn toward vintage electronic sonorities more fully realized on the acclaimed Sophtware Slump in 2000. The odds-and-ends anthology Concrete Dunes arrived in 2002, setting the stage for an active 2003 that included both the Floating Debris EP and the fourth studio album Sumday, followed by extensive touring that encompassed festival stops such as Glastonbury. Grandaddy resurfaced in 2005 with the Excerpts from the Diary of Todd Zilla EP, then issued Just Like the Fambly Cat in 2006, though the latter functioned essentially as a solo endeavor by Lytle because the band dissolved while the sessions were underway.
Lytle subsequently moved from California to Montana and surfaced in 2009 with his debut solo album Yours Truly, The Commuter on Anti-. After issuing the improvised piano set Merry X-Mas 2009 later that year, he formed Admiral Radley alongside former Grandaddy colleague Burtch plus Earlimart members Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray; their debut I Heart California appeared on Espinoza's the Ship label in July 2010. Lytle next concentrated on fresh solo material and was soon enlisted by Fairchild to reunite Grandaddy for several 2012 festival engagements, among them the U.K.'s End of the Road Festival, San Francisco's Outside Lands, Paris' Rock en Seine Festival, and preparatory club dates. While album plans were discussed, Lytle first delivered Dept. of Disappearance in October 2012, again via Anti-.
During a summer 2016 reunion tour that restored the classic lineup of Burtch, Dryden, Fairchild, and Garcia with Lytle, confirmation emerged that a fifth Grandaddy studio album was underway. The band joined Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton's 30th Century Records roster and released Last Place in March 2017; although the classic lineup reconvened for concerts, the record was composed and performed solely by Lytle, aside from limited drumming contributions from Burtch.
Tragedy struck shortly after the album's arrival when bassist Kevin Garcia, who had begun performing with the others at age 15, succumbed to a stroke in May at 41. Grandaddy canceled all remaining tour commitments and remained inactive until the late-2018 release of the track "Bison on the Plains," recorded during the Last Place sessions. In 2020 the group marked the twentieth anniversary of their landmark Sophtware Slump with a deluxe four-LP reissue that incorporated a new solo-piano reinterpretation of the entire album by Lytle; that version appeared as a standalone release titled The Sophtware Slump... On a Wooden Piano in 2021. Returning to new songwriting, Lytle found himself drawn to the wistful atmosphere of classic country and bluegrass ballads, an influence reflected both in the title of the seventh Grandaddy album Blu Wav and in its prominent use of waltz-time structures and pedal steel. As with most recent band recordings, Lytle handled the majority of tracking alone, though pedal steel player Max Hart contributed extensively; Dangerbird issued the album in February 2024.
