Biography
Indie rock stalwarts Elf Power ranked among the standout acts to arise from the Elephant 6 Recording Company circle alongside Neutral Milk Hotel, the Apples in Stereo, and Olivia Tremor Control. Within the Athens, Georgia scene the group cultivated an approach blending off-kilter psychedelic pop, lo-fi sonics, and the edgy yet playful perspective shared by founders Andrew Rieger and Laura Carter. Following several encouraging early recordings, the band achieved its initial studio peak on 1999’s A Dream in Sound. The 2008 release Dark Developments paired the musicians with Georgia songwriter Vic Chesnutt in a collaboration that highlighted the strengths of everyone involved. Artificial Countrysides, issued in 2022, stood out for its pointed political stance, its melodies cushioning a grim assessment of global turmoil.
Elf Power originated in Athens during 1994 when Andrew Rieger launched it as a solo recording venture. He captured songs marked by a skewed, hallucinatory sensibility on a four-track cassette machine, deliberately harnessing the gritty, lo-fi texture to heighten their raw appeal. Rieger performed nearly every part himself, save for sporadic input from Laura Carter, Eric Ledford, and Raleigh Hatfield. Once a pair of cassette-only collections had circulated, he accumulated enough material to press an album for distribution among acquaintances. The resulting Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs, issued on his Drug Racer imprint, contained fifteen originals plus renditions of songs by the Dwarves and Robyn Hitchcock; its existence prompted Rieger to recruit a performing lineup featuring himself on guitar and vocals, Laura Carter on keyboards and musical toys, Bryan Poole (later known as the Late B.P. Helium) on bass, and Aaron Wegelin on drums. Growing assurance led Rieger and Carter to relocate temporarily to New York City, where they issued the five-track Winter Hawk EP in 1996. Returning to Athens, they prepared a follow-up full-length that appeared in 1997 as When the Red King Comes on the Elephant 6 label with distribution handled by Arena Rock Recording Co.; the sessions included guest appearances by Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel and Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal.
For the third album Elf Power enlisted producer Dave Fridmann, previously associated with Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, yielding A Dream in Sound in 1999 to widespread critical approval. Violinist Adrian Finch augmented the touring roster that year, and the group also released the seven-song EP Come On, which featured interpretations of material by T. Rex, Sonic Youth, and Robyn Hitchcock. Rising visibility prompted Arena Rock Recording Co. to reissue the once-scarce Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs in expanded form. The band then moved to Sugar Free Records for 2000’s The Winter Is Coming, supporting it with extensive touring that encompassed both headlining dates and support slots alongside R.E.M. and Wilco. By the arrival of Creatures in 2002, Bryan Poole had departed to focus on solo work and Ballard Lesemann had taken over on bass, while Adrian Finch likewise exited. That same year Elf Power issued Nothing’s Going to Happen on the Orange Twin label, an album of covers that incorporated tracks from the earlier Come On EP. Orange Twin also handled 2004’s Walking with the Beggar Boys, a reflective collection introducing guitarists Eric Harris, formerly of Olivia Tremor Control, and bassist Craig McQuiston, previously with the Glands. Rieger reduced reliance on electric guitars in favor of acoustic textures on 2006’s Back to the Web, the band’s debut for Rykodisc. A similarly subdued direction shaped 2008’s In a Cave, after which the group returned to Orange Twin for Dark Developments, recorded jointly with acclaimed songwriter Vic Chesnutt. The project marked one of Chesnutt’s final endeavors; he passed away in December 2009, and Elf Power’s self-titled 2010 album was dedicated to his memory.
Sunlight on the Moon, the band’s eleventh studio album released in 2013, deliberately echoed the spontaneous character of its earliest work by splitting sessions between a conventional studio and Rieger’s bedroom. Joining longtime core members Rieger and Carter were bassist James Huggins III and drummer Peter Alvanos. Huggins could not participate in the sessions for 2017’s Twitching in Time, so Bryan Poole rejoined while Dave Wrathgabar contributed guitar. Aaron Wegelin, the original drummer, died on February 2, 2021, shortly after returning to Georgia and assisting with a track the band had begun during his earlier tenure. Signing with Yep Roc Records, Elf Power delivered its first project for the imprint, the melodic yet incisive Artificial Countrysides, in July 2022. In addition to Rieger, Carter, Wrathgabar, and Alvanos, the recordings featured supplementary keyboard work from Neil Golden.
