In 1983 guitarist Simon Booth and saxophonist Larry Stabbins launched the British jazz-dance group Working Week after earlier playing together in Weekend. Their first recording arrived the next year with the single “Venceremos (We Will Win),” a salute to Chilean protest singer Victor Jara that enlisted vocal support from Robert Wyatt and Everything But the Girl’s Tracey Thorn. Julie Tippetts handled lead vocals on the follow-up single “Storm of Light,” and the band’s debut album Working Nights surfaced in 1985. A rotating cast of guest singers moved through the lineup until Juliet Roberts became the steady vocalist in advance of the 1986 album Companeros. After 1987’s Knocking on Your Door Roberts exited, prompting another series of guest vocalists to appear on the 1989 release Fire in the Mountain. Yvonne Waite assumed frontwoman duties for the 1991 album Black and Gold.
