Wu Man excels as a master performer on the pipa, recognized as a traditional Chinese lute. Her training follows the Pudong approach under the guidance of Lin Shicheng. She earned the inaugural Master’s degree awarded in pipa studies, claimed victory in the first National Academic Competition for Chinese Instruments, and was honored with the City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protege Prize. Selection for this distinction came from Yo-Yo Ma, himself a recipient, and led to their joint appearance before Chinese and U.S. leaders at the White House. Artistic partnerships encompass the Kronos Quartet and the New York New Music Consort, along with premieres of works by emerging Chinese composers. Toward the end of the 1990s she made her home in the United States. Recordings featuring her contributions have appeared on imprints such as Axiom, Tzadik, Columbia, Water Lily Acoustics, and Ellipsis, while she has also overseen her own projects issued by Nimbus Records.
